What is May Day for Mutts you ask, well at least I did. This is a moment that was created by Karen Derrico, author of Unforgettable Mutts:Pure Of Heart Not of Breed.
This moment was created to shin the light on a horrifying statistic that 75% of all dogs that enter shelters today are mixed breeds. There is such a bad stigma placed on dogs because they are not pure bred, that they get bypassed during the adoption process at the shelters.
Therefore a special day was created to educated the public on these magnificent animals. The official Mayday For Mutts is the first Sunday of each May(May 7Th this year). Actually the entire month is dedicated to these special critters but they do have the one official day. In New Bern I think I saw a sign for May 10Th but I did not see a lot of advertisement for the event. Sorry to say I think I missed it this year.
My thoughts are this, who said a dog has to be pure breed to be a good dog. I have owned many dogs in my life and all have been mixed except 1, but still a rescue dog. They are just as or even more loving, loyal, protective and playful as any pure bred out there.
Please go to this site to learn how to adopt one of these great dogs, I did!
